Consider your audience

Hold it just a second there, kid! Who will be reading--and grading--your paper? The instructor for the course. And the gender of the instructor for the course is...?

Actual quotation from student paper: "The study is the man's room of the house."

Right.

I used to lament that my father didn't have a study, and so would do all his grading and such right in the family room.

Reading turn-of-the-century descriptions of the imperious, absent father made me want to swap my own neuroses for those richer ones.

Well, we can't all have Leslie Stephen for a father. The rest of us just have to make do!

Perhaps the oddest thing about this student's comment was the novel she was writing about: Ian McEwan's 'Saturday.' Set in 2003...it *almost* would have made sense if she had been writing about a Victorian novel.

Very little would surprise me at this point. You know my suspected plagiarist from two posts ago? When I told her she would be hearing from the honor council about her draft because I suspected academic dishonesty SHE DID NOT SO MUCH AS BLINK. I expected at least an eye-widening or "What???" but instead saw complete imperviousness. These kids are shameless...and SEXIST.
